John was born in 1845 in Breightmet.1  John's father was Josiah (Joseph) Phethean and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. He had six brothers and a sister, named Josiaha, William, Joseph, Peter, James, Joseph and Ann.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 62 in 1907 in Breightmet.2
