Ann was born in 1832 in Breightmet.1   Ann's father was Josiah (Joseph) Phethean and her mother was Ellen Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. She had seven brothers named Josiaha, William, Joseph, Peter, John, James and Joseph.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
