James was born in 1848 in Breightmet.1  James' father was Josiah (Joseph) Phethean and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. He had six brothers and a sister, named Josiaha, William, Joseph, Peter, John, Joseph and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 4 in 1852 in Breightmet.2
