Baldwin, known as "Fairbeard", "le Barbu", was born in 0980 in Flandres, France.  "Fairbeard", "le Barbu"'s father was Count Arnolph II of Flanders and his mother was Princess Susanna de Iwill of Italy.  His paternal grandparents were Baldwin III of Flanders and Princess Matilda of Saxony; his maternal grandparents were King Berenger II of Italy and Princess Willa d'Arles of Tuscany. He had two brothers named Eudes and Arnold.  He died in Flandres, France.
