Gilbert the Red was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.  Gilbert the Red's father was Richard de Clare and his mother was Maude de Lacy.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert the Younger de Clare and Isabella Marshal; his maternal grandparents were John de Lacy and Margaret de Quincy. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Bogo, Robert, Isabel, Margaret, Rohese (Agnes) and Eglentina.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Gwent, England.  He was buried on December 22nd, 1295 in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester, England.

‌Gilbert the Red and Alice de Lusignan of were married in a religious ceremony in 1253.  They had two daughters named Joan and Isabella.

‌Gilbert the Red and Joan of Acre were married in a religious ceremony on April 30th, 1290 in Westminster Abbey, London, England.  They had a son and three daughters, named Gilbert, Eleanor (Alinore), Margaret and Elizabeth.
