Gilbert the Red de Clare 
Gilbert the Red was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England. Gilbert the Red's father was Richard de Clare and his mother was Maude de Lacy. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert the Younger de Clare and Isabella Marshal; his maternal grandparents were John de Lacy and Margaret de Quincy. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Bogo, Robert, Isabel, Margaret, Rohese (Agnes) and Eglentina. He was the second oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Gwent, England. He was buried on December 22nd, 1295 in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester, England.General Notes

"Born in 1243, Gilbert rose to become one of the most powerful and
influential men in England at his time; he used the strife of the mid
thirteenth century Baronial Wars to his advantage-siding first with Simon
de Montfort at the battle of Lewis in 1264, and afterwards with Henry II
and Prince Edward. Indeed, the Earl of Gloucester played a crucial role
in the defeat of de Montfort's army at the battle of Evesham the
following year, and used the opportunity to strengthen the family's
position in the Welsh borderlands."
