Richard was born on August 4th, 1222 in Gloucestershire, England.  Richard's father was Gilbert the Younger de Clare and his mother was Isabella Marshal.  His paternal grandparents were Richard FitzRoger de Clare and Amicia FitzRobert of Gloucester; his maternal grandparents were William the Protector Marshal and Isabel Fitz Richard Strongbow de Clare. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Gilbert, Amicia, Isabel and Agnes. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Henry of, Nicholas of, John of and Isabella of.  He died at the age of 39 on July 15th, 1262 in Ashenfield Manor, Eschemerfield, Waltham, Kent, England.  He was buried on July 28th, 1262 in Tewkesbury Abbey, Gloucester, England.

‌Richard and Maude were married in a religious ceremony.  They had four sons and four daughters, named Gilbert the Red, Thomas, Bogo, Robert, Isabel, Margaret, Rohese (Agnes) and Eglentina.
