Ranulf IV de Meschines was born in 1099 in Castle, Gernon, Normandy, France. Ranulf IV de Meschines' father was Ranulph III de Briquessart le Meschines and his mother was Lucy Taillebois. His paternal grandfather was Randulph II le Meschines de Bayeux and his paternal grandmother is Maude d'Avranches de Abrincis; his maternal grandparents were Ivo Thorold de Roumare Taillebois and Lucy Malet. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, Agnes and Alice de Gernons le Meschines of. He died at the age of 54 on December 16th, 1153 in England.General Notes

According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica: "Chester, Ranulf de Gernons,
4th Earl of, Vicomte (viscount) De Bayeux, Vicomte D'avranches. Ranulf
also spelled Randulf, or Ralph, a key participant in the English civil
war (from 1139) between King Stephen and the Holy Roman empress Matilda
(also a claimant to the throne of England). Initially taking Matilda's
part, he fought for her in the Battle of Lincoln (1141), capturing and
briefly imprisoning Stephen. Later (1149) he transferred his allegiance
to the king in return for a grant of the city and castle of Lincoln.
Coventry received its original charter from him."
Some sources list his death in 1155.
