Maud was born in 1175 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.  Maud's father was Richard de Clare III and her mother was Amicia de Bellomont of Gloucester.  Her paternal grandparents were Roger de Clare and Maud de St. Hilary; her maternal grandparents were Earl William ("Mafonache") FitzRobert of Gloucester & Chester and Hawise ("de Beaumont") de Beaumont of Leicester. She had a brother and a sister, named Gilbert and Maud. She had a half-brother named John.  She died at the age of 38 in 1213.

‌Maud and "the Hoarse" were married in a religious ceremony in 1211.  They had a son named Rhys Mechyll.
