Rhys Gryg, known as "the Hoarse", was born in 1150 in Llandilo, Carmarths, England.  "the Hoarse"'s father was Prince Rhys ap Gruffudd of Dehuebarth or South Wales and his mother is Gwenllian ferch Madog.  His paternal grandfather was Prince Gruffudd ap Rhys of South Wales and his paternal grandmother is Gwenllian verch Gruffydd II of Gwynedd; his maternal grandfather was King Madog ap Maredydd of Powys and his maternal grandmother is Susanna verch Gruffydd. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Maelgwn, "Gloff", Gruffudd, Maredudd, Gwenllian, Margred and Angharad. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named "Sais" and Tangwystl.  He died at the age of 83 in 1233 in Llandeilo Fawr.  He was buried in 1233 in St. David's Cathedral, Wales.

‌"the Hoarse" and Maud were married in a religious ceremony in 1211.  They had a son named Rhys Mechyll.

They had a son and a daughter, named Rhys Mechyll and Ellyw.
