Rhys was born in Dynevor Castle, Llandilo, Carmarthenshire, Wales.  Rhys' father was Prince Gruffudd ap Rhys of South Wales and his mother is Gwenllian verch Gruffydd II of Gwynedd.  His paternal grandfather was King Rhys ap Tewdwr I of Deheubarth and his paternal grandmother is Gwladus ap Rhiwallon; his maternal grandparents were King Gruffydd ap Cynan of Gwynedd and Angharad verch Owain. He had three sisters named Gwenllian, Gwladus and Nest.  He died on April 28th, 1197 in St. David's, Pedidiog, Pembroke, Wales.  He was buried in St. David's Cathedral.


Rhys' first family with Gwenddydd verch Cynddelw

‌Rhys and Gwenddydd were married in a religious ceremony about 1153.  They had a daughter named Tangwystl.


Rhys' second family with Ystedur verch Caradog

They had a son named "Sais".


Rhys' third family with Gwenllian ferch Madog

They had five sons and three daughters, named "the Hoarse", Maelgwn, "Gloff", Gruffudd, Maredudd, Gwenllian, Margred and Angharad.
