Rhys was born in 1035 in Deheubarth, Wales.  Rhys' father is King Tewdwr ("Mawr"; the Great) ap Cadell of South Wales and his mother is Gwenllian verch Gwyn of Anglesea.  His paternal grandparents are Cadell ap Einion and Elinor verch Gwerystan; his maternal grandfather is Lord Gwyn ap Rhydderch of Dyvet. He had a sister named Elen.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 58 in 1093 in Brecon, Breconshire.

They had a son and three daughters, named Gruffudd, Nesta, Nest and Margred.
