His paternal grandparents are Baron Gwerystan ap Gwaithfoed of Powys and Nest verch Cadell; his maternal grandfather was Prince Maredudd ap Owain and his maternal grandmother is verch Llandilo. He had a brother and two sisters, named Bleddyn, Angharad and Iwerydd. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Gruffydd and Thurfrida.
