Cynfyn was born about 1002 in Powys, Wales. Cynfyn's father is Baron Gwerystan ap Gwaithfoed of Powys and his mother is Nest verch Cadell. His paternal grandfather is Gwaithfoed ap Gwynnan; his maternal grandfather is Cadell ap Brochwel. He has four sisters named Nest, verch Gwerystan, verch Gwerystan and Elinor.
