Bertha was born about 1122 in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, Anjou/Pays de La Loire, France.  Bertha's father was Conan ("le Grosse") de Bretagne III and her mother was Princess Maud of England.  Her paternal grandparents were Duke Alan Fergent IV of Brittany and Ermengarde d'Anjou; her maternal grandfather was King Henry ("Beauclerc", "Fine Scholar") Plantagenet I of England and her maternal grandmother is daughter. She had a sister named Constance.  She was the younger of the two children.  She died before 1167 in Richmond, Yorkshire, England.


Bertha's family with Earl Alan ("the Black") III of Richmond

‌Bertha and "the Black" were married in a religious ceremony about 1137.  They had three sons named Brian, "le Petit" and Alan.
