Alan, known as "the Black", was born about 1095 in Brittany, France.  "the Black"'s father was Earl Etienne de Penthievre of Richmond and his mother was Hawise de Guingampe Sourdeval.  His paternal grandfather was Count Eudes de Penthievre of Brittany and his paternal grandmother is Princess Agnes de Cornouaille. He had three sisters named Agnoric, Matilda and Olive.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died on September 15th, 1146.


"the Black"'s family with Heiress Bertha of Brittany

‌"the Black" and Bertha were married in a religious ceremony about 1137.  They had three sons named Brian, "le Petit" and Alan.
