James' father was John Swanson and his mother was Mary Thomson. His maternal grandparents were Andrew Thomson and Helen Henderson. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Bill, Andrew, Helen and Mary. He was the third oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 65 on May 19th, 1966 in Santa Barbera. The funeral took place on May 23rd, 1966 in Santa Barbera. He was buried in Santa Barbera.³⁴⁵
