A deputy coroner said she died almost instantly. One of her limbs was severed by the impact. James Sinclair Swanson, 60, of 3740 State St., driver of the car told police he was northbound on 101 in the outside lane when the accident happened. He said he was moving along with the normal flow of traffic and did not see the victim until she was right in front of his car. He said she appeared to be confused and seemed to be turning about in the roadway. Swanson said he immediately applied his brakes and swerved but could not avoid hitting her. Swanson's wife Olive a passenger in his car told police the woman stepped out into the cross walk and appeared to hunched over and trotting from the east side of the highway to the west. Police said that a brown paper bag containing a bottle of whisky was found at the scene. A blood alcohol test showed 15 mgs in the body. Police said Swanson had not been drinking. Officers said the victim was born Dec 7 1887 in Luck, Czechoslovakia. Her body was taken to the Haider Mortuary.
