Reporting to: Henry was witness at Hannah and Robert Valentines Wedding. Possible brother of Hannah, although quite likely Henry Smith, brother-in-law. Joseph Smith, another possible brother of Hannah was lodging with her in 1851.
Other: In 1871, George Stocks (48, Widower, Mason) and son Albert (18) was logsing with Thomas and Joseph Smith and family (Joseph a grocer, wife Martha and two infants) at Gilstead, Bingley, Yorkshire. In 1873 Albert married Jane Smith. However the two Smiths do not seem to be related.
1849 - 1884
Mary
Smith
34
34
What happened to Mary after 1881? There were 32 Marriages and 29 Deaths recorded in Keighley for Mary Smith between 1881 and 1891. The is reduced to 9 possible Marriages and 3 possible deaths if we assume no second name, and take age at death to match age (within 2 years).
Living at Lime Kiln, Micklethwaite, Bingley, Yorkshire (1851 and 1861 and 1871 and 1881), probably in a house next to the Leeds-Liverpool Cannel in a village now known as Crossflatts.
Transcribed as born in 1844 on 1851 census index (age 1 read as 7). Actually born 30-Nov-1849.
In 1881, Mary Smith (31 & unmarried, born Marlow) was a Worstead Spinner with her mother Sarah Foulds (53) at Lime Kiln, Crossflatts, Bingley.
By 1891, Crossflats has expanded and there was no longer a Lime Kiln Lane in Cross Flats (although a Lime Road can be found). Mary Jane Smith (b.1854) was visiting Dove family in Crossflats, but probably not the same Mary.
Mother was shown as Pighills on birth certificate (for sister Jane).

in 1861, William (7) with his parents Henry & Sarah Smith (40 & 36) with Mary (11), Jane (10) at Lime Kiln Lane, Micklethwaite, Bingley, Yorkshire probably in a house close to the Leeds-Liverpool canel in a village now known as Crossflatts.
In 1871, William (17) was still there with mother Sarah and step-father John Foulds (both 44), sister Mary (21) and three half-siblings.
In 1876, William married Lucy and moved to Keighley about 1879.
By 1881, William (27) was living at 9 Grouse Street, Keighley with wife Lucy (25), sons Haney (4) and Hartley (7mo) and three loghers (all railway platelayers)..

WARNIG: There are several PICKLES+SMITH marriages registered at Keighley. Walter George Pickles (1866-1868) is another (his headstone shows a sister Elizabeth and Brother Herbert). They were children of Joseph & Mary Pickles.
1849 to 1863, Edward, James, Sarah and Mary Ann were all baptised at All Saints, Bingley, so we are sure of them.
Living with a blacksmith in 1841 in Padiham, Colne, Burnley, Lancashire, but link to this family confirmed later by him living with sister Caroline in 1851 and niece Jane Smith in 1871.
Had Joseph Smith b.1828 (related to Henry maybe) lodging with them in Bingley in 1851. Was also with his sister Caroline and wife Hannah and first son.
Living in Keighly in 1861.
Living at Eldon St., Bingley, Yorkshire in 1871, with niece Jane staying with them.
Living at 11 St Johns St Primitive Methodist Chapel House in 1881 with another niece Sarah Smith

His middle name, Valietine, was recorded at time of death.

76
Born: Bingley, Yorkshire in 1851.
In 1861, Jane living at Lime Kiln, Micklethwaite, Bingley, probably in a house next to the Leeds-Liverpool Cannel in a village now known as Cross Flatts.
Staying with uncle Robert Pickles (48) his wife Hannah (40) and family at (Eldon St., Bingley) in 1871 and married Albert 2 years later.
In 1873, Jane Smith of Eldon Street married Samuel Stocks.
Married and living at Heather Bank, Bingley, Yorkshire in 1881
Living at 5 Cobden St., Birkenhead in 1891 and 1901. She recorded the death of her mother.Sarah Amy Foulds in Tranmere in 1907.
In 1921, Albert and Jane (born Bingley) were living in Birkenhead
Jane's mothers maiden name was recorded as Pighills on Jane's birth certificate, which was confirmed by Bradford Reg Office and by reference to Mary's Birth certificate.

80
Sarah was born at Bingley (Keighley), Yorkshire, according to 1851 and 1861 census, or Colne Head, Lancashire according to 1871 and 1881 census records.
Baptised and buried as Sarah "Amy" but also known as Sarah "Emma" (in 1841).
In 1841, Sarah Emma Pickles is with parents Thomas, a Wood Cutter born in Yorkshire, and Mary Pickles (55 & 52) and 5 other siblings at Marlow, Bingley. Sarah, her mother and her two older brothers are all born in Lancashire. The family must have moved to Marlow soon after Sarah was born.
In 1861, Sarah was married and living with Henry at Lime Kiln Lane, Bingley, Yorkshire.
10 Nov 1869 Sarah of Cross Flats, widow and daughter of Thomas Pickles a woodman married John Foulds a carter and widower.
By 1871 Sarah had re-married John Foulds, and was still living at Lime Kiln Lane.
By 1891, Crossflatts has expanded and there was no longer a Lime Kiln Lane in Crossflatts (although a Lime Road can be found). Sarah was living at 11 Canel Road in 1891, which may well have been the same house. She had moved to 7 Well Street by 1901.
Was pictured at Mather Family wedding of 1901 in Birkenhead (aged 76).
Sarah's maiden name was recorded as Pighills on Jane's birth certificate. However, she was recorded as Sarah Amy Pickles in 1841 and 1907.
Sarah's father was Thomas, a woodman (or wood cutter) which helps match the family in 1841 and when she was married to John Founds. I believe the christening and death records for "Sarah Emma" (father Thomas) and "Sarah Amy" are for the same person !
I have an old heavy and hand-twisted (as it grew) walking stick, which may have originated from Henry Smith.
1822 - 1867
Henry
Smith
44
44
Henry Smith is my 2x Great grandfather.
There are 5 Henry Smiths in the 1841 census from Bradford and 1 from Bingley who has a sister Mary, and Henry (15) was living with Jane Seed (45), an Inn Keeper, probably his mother and sister Jane (11) at Sand Beds.
In Oct 1846, "Mr Henry Smith, Bingley" won £3 for best ploughman.
Living at Farsley in 1848 at time of marriage. John Smith of Sunny Bank, Farsley was recorded on the 1835 poll book (as well as David Smith of Calverley Mill).
In 1851, Henry a labourer & Sarah (27 & 25) are living at Marlow Road, in the Hamlet of Harden, Bingley. They have Mary (2) and Jane (2 mo).
in 1861, Henry & Sarah Smith (40 & 36) with Mary (11), Jane (10) and William (7) at Lime Kiln, Micklethwaite, Bingley, Yorkshire probably in a house close to the Leeds-Liverpool canel in a village now known as Crossflatts.
In June 1861, they appear to have had a daughter Ann, birth registered in Keighley. Ann may have survived!
Henry died in 1867 at Cross Flats and Sarah re-married John Foulds two years later. Was it suicide or did his wife murder him? See the inquest report in the newspaper.

27 Aug 1833, Thomas Smith of Dowley Gap, Wool Comber married Sarah Anderton of Gilstead.
In 1851, Thomas and Sarah Smith (39 & 38) were at Primrose Hill, Bingley with William, Mathew and Joseph (16, 15, 11)
In 1861, Thomas Smith (47) was a gardener with wife Hannah (46) and son Joseph (21) at Primrose Hill.
In 1891, Thomas (79) was living with son at Primrose Hill.
1826 - <1887
John
Foulds
61
61
John was possibly the son of Thomas Foulds, a cabinet maker of Bingley and Elizabeth. If so, he had an older brother William b 9-Nov-1821 who was also a joiner and cabinet maker.
Born in Bingley in 1827 (if 1871 census is correct).
In 1841, John (14) was living at Barriage Street, Bingley, son of Thompson Foulds, a carrier.
Cant find on any 1861 or 1881 census.
John and two of his sons (John Thompson Foulds. and another) came to the USA. They settled in Texas, but I can find no information about the death of John (Jack) Foulds.

Known as Pickles or Pighills (for children's births).
Living in Marley in 1841 (a hamlet of only a few houses), and interestingly, there was am Eleanor, daughter of Thomas Cockshott of Marley baptised here on 6 Dec 1755 (and a Sarah, 15 Dec 1753). There must surley be a relationship here!
Living at the Wellington Inn, Chapel Lane, Bingley in 1851 with brother Thomas.
Named Pickles in 1851-1881 census records, but later named Pighills at time of death.

(Dinley)
Pickles
49
49
When he married in 1855 he used the name Daniel Pickles ... most strange, but probably has a strong accent and was illiterate.
Dinely is missing from the 1851 census, in 1855 he married Margaret Boocock while working as a miner in Bowling. In 1858 they had a son Edward while living in Coundon,
Co Durham (see scanned image). That son is with them on the 1861 census when they are in Stanley near Wakefield but he vanishes after that. In 1871 the couple are in Leeds and Dineley now has a greengrocer's shop, however
shortly after the census Margaret and infant daughter Drusilla die. Dineley quickly remarries to widow Jane Crawford (nee Briggs).
After his death in 1880 Jane takes over the shop and runs it with her son Alexander from her earlier marriage. All very satisfactory except for the sudden jump from textile worker to miner.
1833 - 1904
Caroline
Pickles
71
71
Name spelled Carolina on familysearch.org and Carroline on 1841 census, when living with parents. Probably, correct name is Caroline.
Living with brother Robert Pickles and family in 1851, because her Mother Mary had died, and father Thomas had moved to Bradford.
Married William Medley, 15/1/1859 (but age 30 on marriage certificate, when should have been 36 and only 32 on 1861 census). It appears that this young lady lied about her age to make herself 6y older, as she had an older husband. By 1881, her true age had returned to the census records.
Her daughter Zilpha lived with, and cared for her mother at Crossflats untill Caroline died in 1904.
1816 - 1840
Margaret
Pickles
23
23
It was either Margaret or Mary Ann that had a son Thomas Wood, but not sure which.
Margaret (father Thomas, a weaver) married Timothy Binns in Keighley in 1845, which seems to be correct.

In 1911, Lucy (55) is described as "Lucy Alma Smith" and a widow, so the A stands for Alma. She had 7 children and two had died, so we have all her children listed! Arthur (30), Ethel (24) and Joseph (21) were still with her. Percy and Ernest had maried and left home.
In 1921, Lucy Alma Smith and her son Arthur were living with her son-in-law John Henry and Ethel Fowlds at Keighley.

Harry died in 1898, aged 21. There is no evidence that he married.

Hartley
Smith
76
76
Hartley was NOT a son of Lucy Alma Hill (as 1911 census shows she only had 7 children and 2 had died)
Hartley was living with Thomas Smiths and Hills in 1891.
In 1881, Hartley (7mo) is with parents William and Lucy and brother Harry (4).
In 1907 Hartley Smith a painter, aged 25, married Esther Shoesmith of Alma Terrace, Moreton. However his father William was a warpdressere. Is this the same person?
In 1908, after they married the family were still living at 14 Alma Terrase, Marlow (when Alex baptised). Hartley was a Painter
In 1911, Hartley was still a House Painter with wife Martha at 4 Upper Mill Row, Morton (both 28). They had a child, (alive, but not with them).
In 1913 another Hartley Smith (same age) married Clara Greenwood at Keighley. Also, from 1913, the Romford births are another Smithj+Shoesmith family.
In 1939, Hartley is missing.
In 1955, Hartley Smith, decorator is in the Phone Book, living at 252 West Lane, Keighley.
1882 - 1959

Percy married in 1904 or 1909 (not sure) and left the area of Keighley.
In 1911, Percy and Clara (20 & 30) had been married one year, and no children yet. They had moved to Luton where Percy was an Engineer's tool fitter.
In 1921, Percy and Clara Smith were still in Luton with no children.

John may have married Sarah Ellis on 13 Oct 1833 in Colne. However, there are 3 or 4 other John Pickles from Colne christened within 2 years (John son of John & Grace, and John son of James & Mary)
John Pickles (28) married Ellen (32) at Bradford in 1842. The hand writing is difficult to read, but the father is Tho's, a Woodman, so age and father are a match.

In 1841 Thomas and Zilpah (unmarried) were both servants at Town Hill House, Bradford (near Wakefield Road), serving Francis and Mary Duffield. Also working there was George Wood (possible father of Thomas) and Emma Whitaker (probable younger sister of Zilpha)
Ten years later in 1851 they ran the Wellington Inn, Bingley, and William was lodging with them along with a 7-year-old ‘nephew’ Thomas Wood - was he the son of an unknown sister of Thomas (possibly Margaret Pickles).
They moved to Leeds by 1861, working as a Pork Butcher with nephew Thomas assisting.
Living at 16 Lisbon Road, West Leeds in 1871, still as a pork butcher, now with son Thomas Whitaker Pickles.

In 1784, Thomas was born in Marley. He married and lived near Colne for about 15 years, before returning to Marley.
Was Thomas a bit of a joker? Three days after Thomas married Mary Roberts at Colne, another Thomas Pickles of Colne married Martha Thornton, also at St Bartholomew's.
In 1812-14, the family lived at Wanless (when Thomas and John were baptised)
In 1816-26, the family lived at Dick Stiles, SSW of Colne.
In 1841-51, Thomas, Mary and family lived at Marlow (aka Marley), Bingley. Thomas was a "Wood Cutter" and "Labourer" (1845), and Woof Bailiff (1846 & 1847).
There was an Eleanor, daughter of Wm Thomas Cockshott of Marley baptised 6 Dec 1755, and Mary Ann 22 Sep 1757. It appears that the name Cockshott may be derived from this family, also living at Marley. Thomas baptised his son William Cockshott Pickles in 1820.
