Martha was born in 1846 in Bingley.1   Martha's father was Thomas Briggs and her mother was Abigail Bradshaw. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Moses, William, Thomas, Christiana, Nancy, Sarah and Mary.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
