Thomas was born in 1839 in Bingley.1   Thomas' father was Thomas Briggs and his mother was Abigail Bradshaw. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Moses, William, Christiana, Nancy, Sarah, Mary and Martha.  He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
