Robert was born in 1823 at DickStiles and his christening took place on June 24th, 1823 at St. Bartholomew's (Colne).¹²

Robert's father was Thomas Pickles and his mother was Mary Roberts. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Pickles and Mary Walsh; his maternal grandparents were James Roberts and Lucy Coulthurst. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, John, William, Edward, Dinley, Margaret, Mary, Sarah, Sarah, Alice and Caroline. He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 74 on August 23rd, 1897 in Bingley. His burial was in Bingley.³³

  The Arthur Blackburn Master Index of Grave inscriptions show a Robert V Pickles was buried in Bingley Cemerary (volume 118 of Index). The grave inscription shows he died Aug 23 1897.

General Notes
- WARNIG: There are several PICKLES+SMITH marriages registered at Keighley. Walter George Pickles (1866-1868) is another (his headstone shows a sister Elizabeth and Brother Herbert). They were children of Joseph & Mary Pickles.
  
  1849 to 1863, Edward, James, Sarah and Mary Ann were all baptised at All Saints, Bingley, so we are sure of them.
  
  Living with a blacksmith in 1841 in Padiham, Colne, Burnley, Lancashire, but link to this family confirmed later by him living with sister Caroline in 1851 and niece Jane Smith in 1871.
  
  Had Joseph Smith b.1828 (related to Henry maybe) lodging with them in Bingley in 1851. Was also with his sister Caroline and wife Hannah and first son.
  
  Living in Keighly in 1861.
  
  Living at Eldon St., Bingley, Yorkshire in 1871, with niece Jane staying with them.
