John's father was Thomas Pickles and his mother was Mary Roberts. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Pickles and Mary Walsh; his maternal grandparents were James Roberts and Lucy Coulthurst. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, Robert, Edward, Dinley, Margaret, Mary, Sarah, Sarah, Alice and Caroline. He was the second oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 62 in December 1876 in Bramley.²

- John may have married Sarah Ellis on 13 Oct 1833 in Colne. However, there are 3 or 4 other John Pickles from Colne christened within 2 years (John son of John & Grace, and John son of James & Mary)
  
  John Pickles (28) married Ellen (32) at Bradford in 1842. The hand writing is difficult to read, but the father is Tho's, a Woodman, so age and father are a match.
