John was born in May 1814 at Colne and his christening took place on December 4th, 1814 at St. Bartholomew's (Colne) conducted by Curate J. Hutchinson.¹

John's father was Thomas Pickles and his mother was Mary Roberts.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Pickles and Mary Walsh; his maternal grandparents were James Roberts and Lucy Coulthurst. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, Robert, Edward, Dinley, Margaret, Mary, Sarah, Sarah, Alice and Caroline.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 62 in December 1876 in Bramley.²

‌John and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony on May 16th, 1842 in Bradford.³   They had a son named Tom.  There are no more children.
