Dinelry, known as Dinley, was born on September 2nd, 1831 in Marlow (aka Marley) and his christening took place on January 1st, 1832 in Bingley.12
Birth Notes
Birthplace is given in both 1861 and 1871 as Morley, Leeds, but this is more likely to be Marlow (or Marley). Maybe the enumerator assumed he meant the small town south of Leeds, not the 9-house hamlet near Keighley.
Name: Dinsley Pickles Birth Date: 2 Sep 1831 Parish: Bingley, All Saints Baptism Date: 1 Jan 1832 Father's Name: Thomas Pickles Mother's Name: Mary Pickles Abode: Marlow, Husbandman
Deaths Dec 1880 (>99%) Pickles Dinley 49 Pontefract 9c 79
Dinely died in 1880. In 1881 his wife has taken over the shop and a son Alexander from her first marriage appears on the scene.
General Notes
When he married in 1855 he used the name Daniel Pickles ... most strange, but probably has a strong accent and was illiterate.
Dinely is missing from the 1851 census, in 1855 he married Margaret Boocock while working as a miner in Bowling. In 1858 they had a son Edward while living in Coundon, Co Durham (see scanned image). That son is with them on the 1861 census when they are in Stanley near Wakefield but he vanishes after that. In 1871 the couple are in Leeds and Dineley now has a greengrocer's shop, however shortly after the census Margaret and infant daughter Drusilla die. Dineley quickly remarries to widow Jane Crawford (nee Briggs).
After his death in 1880 Jane takes over the shop and runs it with her son Alexander from her earlier marriage. All very satisfactory except for the sudden jump from textile worker to miner.
Occupation Details
From 1855 to 1861 Dinley's occupation was Coal Miner in mining / energy.4
Occupation Notes
Recodred on Marriage Crtificate as miner. Also on Birth Record for William as Coal Miner and in 1861 census.again on 1861 census.
From 1871 his occupation was Fruiterer in sales in Methley.5
Dinley and Margaret were married in a religious ceremony on January 14th, 1855 in Bradford by a curate and witnessed by William Holmes and Ephriam Smith.3
Marriage/Union Notes
Married 14-Jan-1855 at Bradford Parish Church. Daniel Pickles, 24, Batchelor, Minor, Boarding, Thomas Pickles, Dyer Margaret Bocock, 23, Spinster, Weaver, Boarding, Samuel Bocock, Miner
They had a son and a daughter, named Edward and Drusilla.
Family Notes
Unlikely as it appears at first, the first marriage of "Daniel Pickles" matches the birth certificate of the first child to "Dineley" Pickles. Mention of his father as Dyer is disappointing, though if the vicar misheard the groom's name he could also have misheard the father's occupation.
The witnesses, was the Sexton at the Bradford Parish Church and William Holmes appears on other unrelated marriage certificates around that time, so they were presumably the stand-in witnesses if the couple couldn't provide their own.
Dinley and Jane were married in a religious ceremony on October 16th, 1871 at St. Silas, Hunslet by Richard Waters and witnessed by William Mellor(?) & Sarah Hick.3
