Robert's father was Albert Pendlebury and his mother was Matilda Fleming. His paternal grandparents were James Pendlebury and Eliza Mather. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Frank, Albert, Alexander, William, Elizabeth and Edna. He was the sixth oldest of the seven children. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named James, James, Frank, Arthur, Mary, Ellen, Catherine and Lucy. He died at the age of 66 in November 1979 in Bolton.²
