Catherine's father was Albert Pendlebury and her mother was Catherine Dowd. Her paternal grandparents were James Pendlebury and Eliza Mather. She had four brothers and three sisters, named James, James, Frank, Arthur, Mary, Ellen and Lucy. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Frank, Albert, Alexander, Robert, William, Elizabeth and Edna.
