John was born in 1834 in Little Heaton and his baptism took place on February 27th, 1834 at St. Leonard (Middleton).1 2  John's father was Nathaniel (Nathan) Mather and his mother was Alice Brooks.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Peter, William, Nathaniel, Joseph, Hannah, Nancy and Alice.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother named John.  He died at the age of 48 in March 1882 in Middleton.  He was buried on March 16th, 1882 in Rhodes (nr. Middleton).3 4

‌John and Victoria were married in a religious ceremony on November 15th, 1857 at St. Leonard (Middleton).5   There are no children.
