John's father was Nathaniel (Nathan) Mather and his mother was Nancy Bromiley. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles; his maternal grandparents were Arthur Bromiley and Ellen Entwistle. He had five half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Peter, William, John, Nathaniel, Joseph, Hannah, Nancy and Alice. He died at 9 months old in August 1823 in Harwood. His burial was on August 19th, 1823 at Bradshaw Chapel.²
