Joseph Brooks

Joseph was born in October 1872 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on October 6th, 1872 at St. Peter's (Bolton).¹²

Joseph's father was Charles Brooks and his mother was Ann Price. His paternal grandparents were James Brooks and Alice Mather. He had six brothers named James, John, Charles, George, William and Robert. He was the oldest of the seven children. He was adopted by George Brooks & Elizabeth Hardy. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Samuel, Ernest and Mary.

  In 1881, Joseph, aged 8, son of Charles and Anne (or Ann) was deaf and dumb. The family were at 29 Major Street, Astley Bridge.
  
  Joseph was described as "a bit of a drifter" and did various jobs. He trained as a clogger. Was a crane operator at a large mill, and after WW1 a stoker on a ship, which came to the USA but he couldnt get off because of his hanycap.
  
  Married Lucy (tbc), also deaf & dumb, sometime after 1900. They had no children.
