Mary was born in June 1894 in Sharples.¹

Mary's father was Charles Brooks and her mother was Matilda Ainsworth. Her paternal grandparents were James Brooks and Alice Mather. She had three brothers named Thomas, Samuel and Ernest. She was the third oldest of the four children. She had seven half-brothers named Joseph, James, John, Charles, George, William and Robert. She died at the age of 1 in March 1896 in Little Bolton.²
