In 1844, James was a Widower when he married Alice Mather. Both were of fulll age. The same year another James Brooks married Sarah Mather.
His first wife probably died about 1841, and after a suitable time found a new younger partner, Alice Mather. She would have already been 6 or 7 months pregnant with George when they married on 6-Oct-1844.
Can't find him on 1841 census, so unable to match his first wife and family with son John (b.1835).
In 1849 James Brookes was a witness at the wedding between Samuel Mather (his brother-in-law, Ann's brother) and Ann Nightingdale.
iIn 1851 James (39, Quarryman), Alice (31) and 4 children were at 6 Waterloo Fold, Little Bolton.
In 1861, James (51) and Alice (41) were at 94 Blackburn Road (East Side), Little Bolton with 5 children.

From 1834 to 1856 James' occupation was Labourer in Little Bolton.4From October 1844 to after 1879 his occupation was Quarryman full time in mining / energy in Little Bolton.5
