Hildegarde was born about 0940 in Gand, Flandre Orientale, Belgium.  Hildegarde's father was Count Arnolph ("the Great") I of Flanders and her mother was Alix de Vermandois.  Her paternal grandparents were Count Baldwin ("the Bald") II of Flanders and Princess Ethelswida of England; her maternal grandparents were Count Herbert II of Vermandois and Princess Adela of France. She had a brother and two sisters, named Baldwin, Elstrude and Ledgarde.  She was the second youngest of the four children.  She died on April 10th, 0990.  She was buried in Abdijkerk, Egmond Aan Den Hoef, Noord Holland, Netherlands.
