Gisela was born in Bayeux, Normandy, France.  Gisela's father was King Charles ("the Simple") III of France and her mother was Princess Edgifu of Wessex.  Her paternal grandparents were King Louis Eliganius ("the Stammerer") II of France and Adelaide Judith; her maternal grandparents were King Edward ("the Elder") d'Angleterre I of England and Aelflaeda de Bernicie. She had two brothers named "Transmarinus", "d'Outre-Mer" and Charles. She has a half-sister named Ermentrude Alpaïs.
