Ermentrude Alpaïs was born in Orléans, Loiret, France.  Ermentrude Alpaïs' father was King Charles ("the Simple") III of France and her mother was Frederuna de Chalons of Hamaland.  Her paternal grandparents were King Louis Eliganius ("the Stammerer") II of France and Adelaide Judith; her maternal grandparents were Count Dietrich von Ringelheim of Hamaland and Reginhild von Friesland. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named "Transmarinus", "d'Outre-Mer", Charles and Gisela.

‌Ermentrude Alpaïs and Gottfried were married in a religious ceremony about 0925.  They had two sons and a daughter, named Gerhard, Gerhard and Gerberge.
