Alpaid was born in Pavie, Italy.  Alpaid's father was Emperor Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire and her mother was Hildegarde of Vinzgau.  Her paternal grandparents were King Pepin ("the Short") III Martel and Bertrada ("the Younger/Au Grand Pied", "big foot") II of Laon; her maternal grandparents were Duke Gerold I of Swabia and Duchess Emma von Swabia of Vinzgau. She had three brothers and two sisters, named "the Younger", "the Pious", "the Hunchback", Rotrude and Bertha. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Hugo, Dhoude Liegarde and Hiltrud.  She died after 0852.

They had two sons and three daughters, named Leuthard, Eberhard Wulfhard, Engeltron, Engeltrude and Suzanna.
