Pepin, known as "the Hunchback", was born in Aachen, Rhineland, Prussia.  "the Hunchback"'s father was Emperor Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire and his mother was Hildegarde of Vinzgau.  His paternal grandparents were King Pepin ("the Short") III Martel and Bertrada ("the Younger/Au Grand Pied", "big foot") II of Laon; his maternal grandparents were Duke Gerold I of Swabia and Duchess Emma von Swabia of Vinzgau. He had two brothers and three sisters, named "the Younger", "the Pious", Rotrude, Bertha and Alpaid. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Hugo, Dhoude Liegarde and Hiltrud.  He died on July 8th, 0810 in Milan, Italy.

‌"the Hunchback" and Bertha were married in a religious ceremony about 0795.  They had a son and two daughters, named Bernhard, Aeda and Theodrate.
