Hiltrud was born about 0787. Hiltrud's father was Emperor Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire and her mother was Fastrade de Franconie. Her paternal grandparents were King Pepin ("the Short") III Martel and Bertrada ("the Younger/Au Grand Pied", "big foot") II of Laon; her maternal grandparents are Raoul III de Franconie and Aeda von Bayern. She had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named "the Younger", "the Pious", "the Hunchback", Hugo, Rotrude, Bertha, Alpaid and Dhoude Liegarde.-
