Richard was born on May 7th, 1815 in Raikes and his baptism took place on June 14th, 1815 at Walmsley Presbyterian.1 2  Richard's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Hannah Knowles.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Ann Howarth; his maternal grandparents were John Knowles and Jane Thomason. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named Nathan, William, Robert, John, Henry, James, Peter, Rachel, Catherine and Ann. He had an adopted brother named Thomas.  He died at the age of 51 in June 1866 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on June 6th, 1866 at St. Paul's (Astley Bridge).3 4

‌Richard and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on July 24th, 1837 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by Vicar J Slade and witnessed by Hannah Rushton.7   They had two biological sons and five biological daughters, named John, William, Hannah, Martha, Alice, Mary and Ellen.  They also had an adopted son and an adopted daughter, named Robert and Ann.  There are no more children.



Richard's second family with Betsy Lee

‌Richard and Betsy were married in a religious ceremony on September 11th, 1854 at St. Peter's (Bolton).8  They had two biological daughters named Elizabeth and Sarah.  They also had a foster daughter named Elizabeth.  There are no more children.


Richard's third family with Jane Mather

‌Richard and Jane were living together in a platonic relationship.  There are no children.
