Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Alice Calderbank. Her paternal grandparents were Edward (Nedde) Mather and Mary Hough. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Edward, Thomas, William, Alice, Ellen and Catherine. She was the second oldest of the eight children. She had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named George, James, Isaac, Nathan, Thomas, Esther, Peggy, Lucy and Ellen. She died at the age of 59 in June 1865 in Wigan.
