James was born in November 1828 in Adlington and his baptism took place on December 28th, 1828 at St. Katherine (B'rod).1 2  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Amy (Amey or Emy) Worsley.  His paternal grandparents were Edward (Nedde) Mather and Mary Hough. He had four brothers and four sisters, named George, Isaac, Nathan, Thomas, Esther, Peggy, Lucy and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John, Edward, Thomas, William, Mary, Alice, Ellen and Catherine.  He died at the age of 45 in June 1874 in Adlington.3

‌James and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony in 1854 at St. Wilfred (Standish).6  They had three sons and seven daughters, named Isaac, Thomas, Nathan, Mary, Ellen, Sarah, Margaret, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth.  There are no more children.
