Edward was born on December 20th, 1807 in Adlington and his baptism took place there on December 27th, 1807.1  Edward's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Alice Calderbank.  His paternal grandparents were Edward (Nedde) Mather and Mary Hough. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, William, Mary, Alice, Ellen and Catherine.  He was the third oldest of the eight children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named George, James, Isaac, Nathan, Thomas, Esther, Peggy, Lucy and Ellen.
