James was born on May 4th, 1801 in Bolton and his baptism took place on June 14th, 1801 in Dukes Alley Chapel (NC).1 2  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Betty Sutcliff.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jennet (Jenny) Hamer. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, Thomas, John, Mary, Jane, Hannah and Betty.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 69 on April 9th, 1871 in Bolton.  He was buried in April 1871 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.3 4

‌James and Alice were married in a religious ceremony on December 3rd, 1828 at St. Peter's (Bolton).7  They had a son and five daughters, named Wright, Hannah, Betsy, Mary, Alice and Emma.
