Elizabeth, known as Betsy, was born on September 24th, 1835 in Bolton and her baptism took place on July 5th, 1859 at Fletcher St Wesleyan Mathodist Chapel conducted by Henry H. Chettle.¹²

  It seems strange Elizabeth baptized (aged 24). However, the family are confirmed as living at 1 Commission Street, Bolton in 1851 and 1861 and 1871.

Betsy's father was James Mather and her mother was Alice Hartley. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Sutcliff. She had a brother and four sisters, named Wright, Hannah, Mary, Alice and Emma. She was the second oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 61 on December 21st, 1896 in Bolton. Her burial was in December 1896 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.³³
