Birth registered as Ellen Ann, and baptised 17 Jul 1852 at Astley Bridge. but known as Alice. Then on 5 Sep 1852 she was baptised again as Alice Ann Mather, daughter of Samuel (a spinner) and Ann. They changed their mind! There is no birth registered from an Alice Ann Mather.
In 1861, Alice was 8 years old and at school, living with with her parents Samuel and Ann at 12 Back Haigh Street, Little Bolton.
