William was born in October 1864 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on December 4th, 1864 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  William's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had ten brothers and six sisters, named James, John, Walter, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, George, Walter, Alice, Sarah, Alice, Sarah, Mary and Ada.  He was the seventh oldest of the seventeen children.  He died at the age of 64 on May 3rd, 1929 in Failsworth.3
