James' father was Robert Leatherbarrow and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had ten brothers and six sisters, named John, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, George, Walter, Alice, Sarah, Alice, Sarah, Mary and Ada.  He was the oldest of the seventeen children.  He died in 1856 in Bolton.¹
