Alice's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and her mother was Ellen Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. She had eleven brothers and five sisters, named James, John, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, George, Walter, Alice, Sarah, Sarah, Mary and Ada.  She was the sixth oldest of the seventeen children.  She died as an infant at the age of 1 in 1864 in Little Bolton.¹
