Walter was born in January 1882 in Chadderton and his baptism took place there on March 8th, 1882.1 2  Walter's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had ten brothers and six sisters, named James, John, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, George, Alice, Sarah, Alice, Sarah, Mary and Ada.  He was the youngest of the seventeen children.  He died at 8 months old in September 1882 in Prestwich.3
