George was born in December 1877 in Little Bolton.¹

George's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had ten brothers and six sisters, named James, John, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, Walter, Alice, Sarah, Alice, Sarah, Mary and Ada.  He was the third youngest of the seventeen children.  He died as an infant at the age of 1 in 1878 in Bolton.¹
