Robert's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and his mother was Ellen Mather. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. He had ten brothers and six sisters, named James, John, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, George, George, Walter, Alice, Sarah, Alice, Sarah, Mary and Ada. He was the twelfth oldest of the seventeen children. He died at the age of 48 in January 1922 in Salford.²
