Mary's father was Robert Leatherbarrow and her mother was Ellen Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Warburton. She had eleven brothers and five sisters, named James, John, Walter, William, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Robert, George, George, Walter, Alice, Sarah, Alice, Sarah and Ada.  She was the fifth youngest of the seventeen children.  She died as an infant in 1874 in Little Bolton.¹
